NÖN Interview on PHP Security Vulnerability
A critical security vulnerability in the PHP programming language recently drew widespread attention. As a result, numerous websites, including those of the University of Vienna, Graz University of Technology and Caritas, were taken offline as a precautionary measure. IT security expert Marc Nimmerrichter, Managing Partner at Certitude Consulting, explains the cause and far-reaching consequences of this vulnerability in an interview with the NÖN.
Cybercriminals could have exploited this vulnerability for malicious purposes, as PHP is primarily used for websites that offer dynamic content or include features such as search forms. Among these are news portals, online stores and content management systems.
By abusing this vulnerability, websites could be visually altered, known as defacement, to spread political messages and harm the operators reputation. Attempts at extortion and data theft are also possible. Nimmerrichter expects such attacks to occur in the coming weeks and months.
Further details are explained in the NÖN article (available in German): PHP-Sicherheitslücke: Warum Millionen Websites weltweit offline gingen
